Everything On It

Remember Shel Silverstein? The author of Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up, those unforgettable collections of silly, simple, and truthful poems. Even though the beloved poet of those nostalgic poems has passed on, his talent continues in a collection of scrapped poems the Silverstein family carefully selected to publish in this book Everything On It, which released today!

This is so throwback for me, I had to order myself a copy after hearing previews of some of the poems on NPR's segment about it.

A Bedtime Story

An adult one at that. Ever tried putting a kid to bed? If not, do you remember trying to fall asleep as a kid? If you could slightly recall, it wasn't that easy. Imagine what a pain it must have been for your parents to finally put you in dream land? If it was possible.. it was an accomplishment.

And so are the origins for the book "Go the F*ck to Sleep." It's my latest and greatest purchase, only $4.79 through Kindle. In it is the oh so familiar children's book rhetoric coupled with foul language and contradicting illustrations to trick your mind into believing it really is a children's book, when actually it's far from it. I'll leave you with a quick tease of the contents of this short but wholly satisfying book, and maybe you too will be convinced of its nostalgic and delightfully inappropriate splendor.

bookworm

Working in DTLA put me in touch with some sources I would've never had the time or patience to visit if I hadn't worked out here. Even though the drive can be a pain sometimes.. having places like The Central LA Public Library (LAPL) nearby makes it worth while. So I made my way there twice last week. Once to find out I couldn't visit because of the shortened hours (blame the state budget cuts), and again to finally wander the historic edifice and satisfy my curiosities.

The Selby

"The Selby" recently released its official book that gives ordinary drones like us a peek into the interesting homes and lives of several artists, writers, photographers, and designers. If you haven't heard of The Selby til now, do yourself a favor and start exploring the fascinating lives of The Selby's select strangers. Just like the Satorialist, this frequented website-turned-book is just another one worth adding to any book collection.

A Wreck

Doing my frequent visits to the bookstore led me to discover this particular book under the staff recommendations. It's sort of a like a personal scrapbook where each page challenges you to create... err wreck it in a different way. See for yourself:

Four letter words

Trace your hand

Give away your favorite page

Scribble wildly, violently

I've decided a book like this is probably just what I need to remedy this case of boredom I suffer from right now. Anyone's welcome to help me fill these pages.
